Phullara Attahas

One of the great Shakti Peethas — where the lips of Sati are said to have fallen. The Mother abides as Phullara at Attahas in Birbhum, her name recalling Shiva's mighty laughter (attahasa), guarded by the Bhairava Vishwesh.

In the Shakta heartland of Birbhum stands Attahas — “the great laughter” — one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the lips of Sati fell. Here the Mother is Phullara, worshipped as a wide, serene stone face amid quiet groves, one of the beloved Devi seats sung of in Bengal's Shakta tradition.
The name Attahas
The site's name recalls the thunderous laughter (attahasa) of Shiva; the Devi's shrine here is set in peaceful surroundings dear to Bengal's Shakta pilgrims.
A wide-lipped stone form
The Mother is worshipped as a broad stone face representing the fallen lips — the elemental Shakta form, adorned and honoured by generations of devotees.
Where the lips fell कथा
As Shiva bore Sati and Vishnu's chakra divided her body, her lips came to rest at Attahas, and the Mother took her seat there as Phullara, guarded — as at every Peeth — by Shiva himself as the Bhairava Vishwesh.
Birbhum, thick with the worship of the Mother, honours Attahas among its cluster of Peethas, taken by pilgrims along with nearby Tarapith, Kankalitala and Bakreshwar.
