How the Shakti Peethas came to be कथा

King Daksha held a great yajna but, in his pride, did not invite his daughter Sati or her husband Shiva. Sati went uninvited, and there endured her father's insults against Shiva. Unable to bear the dishonour of her Lord, she gave up her body in the sacrificial fire.

Maddened by grief, Shiva lifted Sati's body upon his shoulder and roamed the cosmos in the terrible Tandava, threatening all creation. To release him from his sorrow, Bhagavan Vishnu sent his Sudarshana Chakra, which divided Sati's body; her limbs and ornaments fell at many places across the earth. Every spot where a part fell became a Shakti Peeth — a seat of the living Goddess — and at each, Shiva himself abides as the guardian Bhairava.

The 18 Maha Shakti Peethas अष्टादश शक्तिपीठ

Adi Shankaracharya's Ashtadasha Shakti Peetha Stotram enshrines eighteen supreme Peethas — “rare even for yogis to attain.” This stotram is the classic roll-call of the Mother's great seats.

Manasa (Dakshayani) near sacred Lake Manasarovar at the foot of Mount Kailash, the abode of Shiva.

Traditions differ — the Puranas and Tantras count 51, 52, 64 or even 108 Peethas. And near the Vindhya mountains dwells Maa Vindhyavasini — a great Siddha Peeth revered as the combined form of all the Shakti Peethas.
