One of the great Shakti Peethas — where both knees of Sati are said to have fallen. The Mother abides as Guhyeshwari beside the Bagmati near sacred Pashupatinath, a supreme seat of Shakta-Tantric worship in Nepal.
Guhyeshwari of the Bagmati गुह्येश्वरी
A short way from the great temple of Pashupatinath, on the banks of the Bagmati, stands Guhyeshwari — “the secret Goddess” — one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the knees of Sati fell. Worshipped as Guhyakali or Mahamaya, she is a supreme seat of the Shakta-Tantric tradition, revered by Hindus and honoured too in the Vajrayana of the valley.
A kalasha, not an image
In the sunken sanctum the Devi is worshipped as a sacred kalasha (vessel) upon the earth — the elemental, aniconic form of the Mother, veiled from the casual gaze.
Bound to Pashupatinath
Shiva as Pashupati and Shakti as Guhyeshwari are the great pair of the Kathmandu valley; pilgrims take darshan of both, the Lord and the Mother, together.
Where the knees fell कथा
As Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra divided the body of Sati, her knees came to rest here by the Bagmati, and the Mother took her seat as Guhyeshwari, guarded — as at every Peeth — by Shiva himself as her Bhairava.
The Tantras hold this among the most charged of the Devi's secret seats; her worship is woven deep into the sacred life of the Kathmandu valley.
