Where the toes of Sati's right foot fell, the Mother abides as Kali — dark, fierce and endlessly compassionate. Kalighat is one of the four Adi Shakti Peethas and among the most beloved Kali shrines anywhere; the very name of the city, Kolkata, is often traced to Kalikshetra, the field of Kali.
The distinctive image
Kali here is worshipped as a striking three-eyed form with a long golden tongue and three great eyes — Dakshina Kali, the remover of fear and giver of liberation.
A living Shakta centre
For centuries Kalighat has drawn saints and seekers — Sri Ramakrishna's Kolkata was steeped in this Mother's worship — and it remains a tireless heart of Bengali Shakta devotion.
Where the toes fell कथा
As Shiva bore Sati's body across the worlds and Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra divided her limbs, the toes of her right foot fell here upon the bank of the Adi Ganga. The spot became a Shakti Peeth, and Shiva remained as the guardian Bhairava, Nakuleshwar.
From a small shrine in the forest by the river, Kalighat grew over centuries into the great temple that today receives an unceasing river of devotees.

Offerings
Red hibiscus garlands (Kali's beloved flower), chunari, sindoor and sweets. Bali (offering) is part of the old Shakta tradition here, especially on festival days.

Shiva as Nakuleshwar Mahadev is worshipped in the complex; devotees pay respects to the Bhairava alongside the Mother.
