Shankari Devi Trincomalee
शाङ्करी देवी — त्रिंकोमाली, श्रीलंका
The very first Peeth named in Adi Shankara's Ashtadasha stotram — Shankari Devi by the sea at Trincomalee, beside the ancient Koneswaram temple of Shiva.
Shankari of the eastern sea शाङ्करी
“Lankāyāṁ Śaṅkarī-devī…” — with these words Adi Shankaracharya begins the roll-call of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas. Shankari at Trincomalee, on the cliff of Swami Rock beside the great Koneswaram temple, is thus honoured as the first of them all.
Beside Koneswaram
The Devi's shrine stood with the celebrated Koneswaram Shiva temple on Swami Rock, high above the Indian Ocean — Shakti and her Bhairava together above the waves.
A shrine tested by history
The historic temple was largely destroyed during the colonial period; worship continues at a rebuilt shrine, and pilgrims still seek Shankari as the first of the eighteen seats.
The seat across the sea कथा
In the Shakti Peeth tradition a part of Sati is linked with Lanka, where the Mother took her seat as Shankari. Adi Shankaracharya enshrined her at the head of his Ashtadasha stotram, so that every recitation of the eighteen begins here, across the sea.
Though the original temple was lost to the turbulence of history, the sanctity of the place endures — the Mother's first seat, watching over the eastern ocean.
