Bengal — the land most densely woven with the worship of the Mother — holds several Shakti Peethas, and among the eighteen great seats named by Adi Shankara is Shrinkhala at Pandua. Here, tradition holds, the stomach (udara) of Sati fell.
The name Shrinkhala
“Shrinkhala” means a chain or girdle — the form in which the Mother is remembered at this seat among the eighteen.
An ancient, humbler seat
Unlike the grand living temples of some Peethas, Shrinkhala's original shrine did not survive the centuries; the sanctity of the spot near Pandua endures in tradition and local worship.
Where the stomach fell कथा
As Shiva bore Sati across the worlds and Vishnu's chakra divided her form, her stomach came to rest at Pandua in Bengal, and the Mother took her seat there as Shrinkhala — enshrined by Adi Shankaracharya among the eighteen Maha Peethas.
Traditions and temple histories differ over the exact site; what endures is the reverence of Bengal for the Mother who dwells here as one of her supreme seats.
