Bahula of the Ajay बहुला

By the banks of the Ajay river at Ketugram in Bardhaman dwells Bahula Devi — one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the left arm of Sati fell. Worshipped in a serene old shrine, she is counted among the ancient Devi seats of Bengal, her Bhairava the fierce Bhiruk.

A form of Chandika

At Bahula the Mother is revered as a form of Chandika, the Devi who slays evil — the arm that fell here recalling her power to strike down all darkness.

By the Ajay river

The shrine near the Ajay is a peaceful Shakta seat, taken by pilgrims along with the great Devi temples of Bardhaman and Birbhum.

Katha & Scripture

Where the left arm fell कथा

As Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra divided the body of Sati, her left arm came to rest at Ketugram, and the Mother took her seat there as Bahula, guarded by Shiva himself as the Bhairava Bhiruk.

Bengal, most densely woven with the worship of the Mother, honours Bahula among its many Peethas, her shrine drawing devotees through the great autumn festivals.
