One of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas — Sharada, the Mother as Saraswati, and one of the ancient world's greatest seats of learning, whose name lives on in the Sharada script.

Adi Shankara's stotram closes with “…Kāśmīre tu Sarasvatī” — the Mother as Sharada (Saraswati) in Kashmir. Once among the foremost universities of the ancient world, Sharada Peeth drew scholars from across Bharat; the very Sharada script of Kashmir bears her name, and Kashmir itself was praised as Sharada Desh, the land of the Goddess of learning.

So great was its learning that to be honoured at Sharada Peeth was the highest recognition a scholar could receive; tradition links even Adi Shankara's ascent of the Sarvajna-peetha (throne of omniscience) to this seat.
Ruins & renewal
The historic temple, in the Neelum (Kishanganga) valley now under Pakistani administration, lies in ruins near the Line of Control. In 2023 a new Sharada temple was consecrated on the Indian side in Kupwara, reviving her worship.
The land named for the Goddess कथा
In the Shakti Peeth tradition the right hand of Sati is linked with Kashmir, where the Mother took her seat as Sharada. Over centuries the shrine became a beacon of Sanskrit learning — Kalhana, Bilhana and countless scholars sang its glory.
Though the ancient temple fell into ruin, the Mother of learning is remembered wherever knowledge is honoured; and with the new temple in Kupwara, her worship has begun anew.
