The foremost of the four Adi Shakti Peethas — the seat of creation where the yoni of Sati fell, and the greatest centre of Tantra and Devi-worship in the East.
The seat of creation सृष्टि की देवी
When Sati's body was divided, her yoni — the very womb of creation — fell upon Nilachal Hill. For this reason Kamakhya is honoured as the first and mightiest of the Adi Shakti Peethas: the Mother worshipped not through an image but as the source of all life itself. Here she is Kamakhya — “she who grants desires” — and this land is Kamarupa.
Worshipped as the yoni-stone
There is no idol in the sanctum. The Devi is adored as a natural cleft in the rock, shaped like a yoni, kept forever moist by an underground spring — the living symbol of the creative Shakti from whom the universe is born.
The great Tantra Peeth
Kamakhya is the beating heart of Shakta Tantra. The ten Mahavidyas — Kali, Tara, Bhuvaneshwari and the rest — all have their shrines upon Nilachal Hill.
The womb that became a tirtha कथा
Grief-stricken after Sati gave up her body at Daksha's yajna, Shiva wandered the cosmos bearing her upon his shoulder. As Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra divided her form, her yoni fell here on Nilachal — and the hill is said to have turned blue as Shiva descended to abide as its Bhairava.
Where the womb of the Goddess touched the earth, the very ground became fertile with her power; and each year, at Ambubachi, the Mother is believed to renew that creative cycle.

Offerings
Red chunari, hibiscus and red flowers, sindoor, coconut and sweets. The “Ambubachi cloth” (raktavastra) is a revered prasad.
The Bhairava
Shiva abides as Bhairava at Umananda on Peacock Island in the Brahmaputra — a short ferry from the ghats.

Ambubachi Mela
The Mother's yearly “menstruation” — the temple closes three days, then reopens in a vast festival of sadhus and tantriks.

October–April is pleasant. Ambubachi (June) is most powerful but very crowded.
