Hinglaj Mata

हिंगलाज माता — हिंगोल, बलूचिस्तान

A great Shakti Peeth where the Brahmarandhra — the crown of Sati's head — is said to have fallen; a cave shrine deep in Balochistan's Hingol desert, and one of the most storied pilgrimages of the West.

Hinglaj of Hingol हिंगलाज

Deep in the Makran desert, in a cave by the Hingol river, dwells Hinglaj Mata — the Devi as Kottari, where the crown of Sati's head fell. Revered by Hindus as a Shakti Peeth and honoured even by local Muslims as “Nani Mandir,” Hinglaj is among the most remarkable pilgrimages anywhere.

A shrine of natural stone

There is no carved idol; the Devi is worshipped as a small stone smeared with sindoor within the cave — the ancient, elemental form of the Mother.

The Hinglaj Yatra

The traditional pilgrimage crosses desert and mud-volcanoes (Chandragup), where pilgrims offer coconuts before reaching the Mother — a journey of great austerity and joy.

Katha & Scripture

Where the crown fell कथा

As Shiva bore Sati and Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra divided her body, the Brahmarandhra — the crown of her head — fell here in the Hingol wilderness, and the Mother took her seat as Hinglaj (Kottari), guarded by the Bhairava Bhimalochana.

For centuries pilgrims have crossed the harsh Makran to reach her; the yatra, once perilous, remains among the most beloved of all the Devi's roads.

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥
yā devī sarva-bhūteṣu śakti-rūpeṇa saṁsthitā ।
namas-tasyai namas-tasyai namas-tasyai namo namaḥ ॥
“To the Devi who abides in all beings in the form of Power — salutations to her, again and again.”
— Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmya), Chapter 5
