One of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas — the Mother atop Chamundi Hill, Chamundeshwari, who slew Mahishasura and gives Mysuru (Mahishuru) its very name.

High on Chamundi Hill above Mysuru dwells Chamundeshwari — the form the Devi took to slay the buffalo-demon Mahishasura. The city was Mahishuru, the demon's realm; freed by the Mother, it became Mysuru, and she remains its guardian and royal deity.
Mardini — the victorious Mother
Chamundeshwari is Durga as Mahishasura Mardini; a giant statue of Mahishasura and the sacred Nandi stand upon the hill, marking her great victory.
The royal deity of Mysuru
She is the tutelary goddess of the Wadiyar dynasty; the world-renowned Mysuru Dasara is, at heart, the celebration of her triumph.
The Mother who freed Mahishuru कथा
When the buffalo-demon Mahishasura terrorised the worlds, the gods poured their powers into the Devi, who took form as Chamundeshwari and slew him after a mighty battle — the very story sung in the Devi Mahatmya. The hill and the city took their names from that victory.
As with many Peethas, texts differ on which part of Sati is linked here; Mysuru's glory rests on Chamundeshwari as one of the eighteen supreme seats and the vanquisher of Mahishasura.
