One of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas named by Adi Shankara — the ancient abode of Mahalakshmi, worshipped in Karavir (Kolhapur) as Ambabai, the Mother of fortune and grace.

Kolhapur — the ancient Karavir Kshetra — is honoured in Adi Shankara's Ashtadasha stotram as a great Shakti Peeth, the dwelling of Mahalakshmi. Here the Mother of wealth and well-being is loved as Ambabai, and the Puranas call Karavir a place so sacred that the Devi never leaves it.
The ancient stone image
The Devi is worshipped as a striking black-stone murti bearing weapons and a crown, richly adorned — an image the tradition holds to be swayambhu (self-manifest) and immensely old.
Kirnotsav — the sun's homage
Twice a year the setting sun's rays enter the sanctum and fall directly on Mahalakshmi's face over three days — as if Surya himself comes to worship the Mother.
The Devi who would not leave Karavir कथा
Kolhapur is glorified in the Puranas as the eternal home of Mahalakshmi — a Shakti Peeth where the Mother chose to abide forever. Adi Shankaracharya enshrined it among the eighteen supreme Peethas of the Goddess, and pilgrims have sought Ambabai's grace here across the ages.
Traditions differ on which part of Sati is linked with which Peeth; Kolhapur's glory rests above all on its standing as one of the eighteen great seats of the living Mahalakshmi.

Offerings
