Jayadurga Deoghar
जयदुर्गा देवी — देवघर, झारखण्ड
One of the great Shakti Peethas — where the heart of Sati is said to have fallen. The Mother abides as Jayadurga within the great Baidyanath Dham, where the Jyotirlinga and the Shakti Peeth stand together — guarded by the Bhairava Vaidyanath.
Jayadurga of Baidyanath Dham जयदुर्गा
At Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar — one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva — the Mother abides as Jayadurga, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the heart of Sati fell. Here the seat of Shiva and the seat of Shakti stand together in one great dham, a rare union of Jyotirlinga and Peeth revered across the East.
Jyotirlinga and Peeth as one
Deoghar is that rare kshetra where a Jyotirlinga of Shiva and a Shakti Peeth of the Devi are enshrined together — the Lord and the Mother in a single sacred complex.
The sacred thread of union
A tradition binds the shikharas of the Baidyanath and Jayadurga temples with a sacred thread (gathbandhan), symbolising the eternal union of Shiva and Shakti.
Where the heart fell कथा
As Shiva bore Sati and Vishnu's chakra divided her body, her heart — the seat of love — came to rest at Deoghar, and the Mother took her seat there as Jayadurga, beside her Lord who abides as the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga.
So the pilgrim to Baidyanath Dham worships both the Jyoti of Shiva and the heart of the Devi; the shravani mela draws the kanwariyas in their millions to this united dham.
