Mahakali Ujjain

महाकाली — हरसिद्धि, उज्जैन (अवंतिका)

One of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas and one of the three supreme seats of the Mother — Ujjain, ancient Avantika, where she abides as Mahakali (Harsiddhi), the power of dissolution.

Mahakali of Avantika महाकाली

In sacred Ujjain — home of the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga — the Mother abides as Mahakali, worshipped at the ancient Harsiddhi temple by the Shipra. Among the three most exalted seats of the Devi, she here embodies annihilation — the return of all things into the Mother.

Harsiddhi Mata

The Peeth is enshrined at Harsiddhi temple, where Mahakali and Annapurna are worshipped; legend links the shrine to King Vikramaditya's devotion.

The lamp-towers (Deep Stambh)

Two great pillars studded with hundreds of lamps blaze during Navratri — one of the most breathtaking sights of Devi-worship in India.

Katha & Scripture

The Mother of Mahakal कथा

As Shiva bore Sati and Vishnu's chakra divided her, a part of the Goddess came to rest at Avantika (Ujjain). There she abides as Mahakali beside Mahakaleshwar — Shiva as Lord of Time and Death — so that in Ujjain, Time itself and its Mother are worshipped side by side.

It is counted among the three supreme Peethas: Kamakhya for creation, Sarvamangala (Gaya) for nourishment, and Mahakali of Ujjain for annihilation.

नमो देव्यै महादेव्यै शिवायै सततं नमः।
नमः प्रकृत्यै भद्रायै नियताः प्रणताः स्म ताम्॥
namo devyai mahā-devyai śivāyai satataṁ namaḥ ।
namaḥ prakṛtyai bhadrāyai niyatāḥ praṇatāḥ sma tām ॥
“Salutations to the Devi, to the Great Devi, to the auspicious Shiva ever; salutations to Prakriti, the benign — with restraint we bow to her.”
