Devagarbha Kankalitala

One of the great Shakti Peethas — where the waist (kankal) of Sati is said to have fallen. The Mother abides as Devagarbha at Kankalitala beside the Kopai river near Santiniketan, guarded by the Bhairava Ruru.
Devagarbha of the Kopai देवगर्भा
A short way from Santiniketan, on the quiet banks of the Kopai river, lies Kankalitala — the “place of the waist” — one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the kankal (waist) of Sati fell. The Mother is worshipped here as Devagarbha, her sacred spot marked by a small tank (kunda) beneath a great tree, revered across Bengal.

The Devi's presence here is honoured at a small tank beside the shrine, beneath an old tree; the spot is among the most atmospheric of Bengal's Peethas.

Where the waist fell कथा
As Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra divided the body of Sati, her waist (kankal) came to rest here by the Kopai, and the Mother took her seat as Devagarbha, guarded — as at every Peeth — by Shiva himself as the Bhairava Ruru.
Kankalitala is counted among the four principal Peethas of Birbhum, taken by pilgrims along with Tarapith, Bakreshwar and Nalhati on the wider Devi circuit.
