Mangala Gauri Gaya
मंगला गौरी — गया, बिहार
One of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas and one of the three supreme seats of the Mother — Mangala Gauri of Gaya, who embodies nourishment, the Devi who sustains all life.
Mangala Gauri of Gaya सर्वमंगला
On Mangalagauri hill in ancient Gaya, the Mother abides as Mangala Gauri — Sarvamangala, the all-auspicious. Among the three most exalted Peethas she is the seat of nourishment: as Kamakhya is creation and Ujjain's Mahakali is dissolution, Gaya's Mother is she who feeds and sustains the worlds.
A breast shrine
Tradition holds that a breast of Sati fell here — fitting for the Mother of nourishment — and she is worshipped in symbolic (not anthropomorphic) form upon the hill.
Beside the pitr-tirtha
Gaya is the great place of shraddha for the ancestors (near Vishnupad); the pilgrim who honours the forefathers also bows to the Mother who nourishes all.
The Mother of all auspiciousness कथा
As Shiva carried Sati and her body was divided, a part came to rest on Mangalagauri hill at Gaya, and the Mother took her seat there as Sarvamangala — the source of every blessing.
So Gaya holds two great powers together: the tirtha where the departed are given peace, and the Peeth where the living Mother grants nourishment and grace.
