Jayanti Nartiang
जयन्ती देवी — नारतियांग, मेघालय
One of the great Shakti Peethas — where the left thigh of Sati is said to have fallen. The Mother abides as Jayanti at the Nartiang Durga temple in the Jaintia Hills, a great seat of the Devi in the Northeast, guarded by the Bhairava Kamadishwar.
Jayanti of Nartiang जयन्ती
In the green Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya stands the Nartiang Durga temple, where the Mother abides as Jayanti — one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the left thigh of Sati fell. The very name Jaintia is said to come from Jayanti; the temple, patronised by the old Jaintia kings, is a rare and beautiful blend of Shakta worship and the traditions of the hills.
The royal Devi of the Jaintias
The temple was the seat of the Jaintia kings' worship of the Mother; her festival is central to the sacred life of the region, and the name Jaintia itself honours Jayanti.
A shrine of the hills
Set among the forests and monoliths of the Jaintia Hills, Nartiang joins the Shakta tradition to the distinctive heritage of Meghalaya.
Where the left thigh fell कथा
As Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra divided the body of Sati, her left thigh came to rest in the Jaintia Hills, and the Mother took her seat there as Jayanti, guarded by Shiva himself as the Bhairava Kamadishwar.
The kings of Jaintia held her as their guardian Mother, and her worship — carried on through the centuries at Nartiang — remains a living heart of Devi devotion in the Northeast.
