In Kanchipuram — one of the seven sacred cities of Bharat — the Mother abides as Kamakshi, uniquely seated in padmasana rather than standing. She is the great seat of Sri Vidya, and tradition holds that Adi Shankaracharya established the Sri Chakra before her and calmed her fierce grace into serene benevolence.

Unusually, Kamakshi is worshipped seated in deep meditation. The Sri Chakra installed by Adi Shankara is central to her worship — Kanchi is a living home of the Sri Vidya lineage.

In Kanchipuram, the great Shiva temple of Ekambareshwara and the Devi Kamakshi are worshipped as the divine couple; here alone, they say, the Mother reigns as queen of the city.
The Mother who accepted the Sri Chakra कथा
Kanchi is honoured in Adi Shankaracharya's Ashtadasha stotram as a great seat of the Goddess. Tradition tells that Kamakshi's power was so intense that Shankara installed the Sri Chakra before her and worshipped her, so that her grace flowed to devotees as gentle compassion.
As with many Peethas, texts differ on which part of Sati is linked with which shrine; Kanchi's glory rests above all on Kamakshi as one of the eighteen supreme seats and the fount of Sri Vidya.
