Tripura Sundari Udaipur
त्रिपुरसुन्दरी माता — उदयपुर, त्रिपुरा
One of the great Shakti Peethas — where the right foot of Sati is said to have fallen. The beloved Matabari of Udaipur, patron Mother of the whole land of Tripura, whose very name the state bears.
Tripura Sundari of Matabari त्रिपुरसुन्दरी
In the town of Udaipur stands the Matabari, the temple of Maa Tripura Sundari — one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the right foot of Sati fell. So dear is she to the region that the state of Tripura is named for her. The temple sits on a small hillock shaped like the back of a tortoise (Kurma), and hence the site is revered as the Kurma Peeth.
Chhoti Ma & Bari Ma
Within the sanctum are two images of the Devi — the larger (Bari Ma) as Tripura Sundari and the smaller (Chhoti Ma) as Chandi — both worshipped with equal love.
Built by the Manikya kings
The red-domed Bengali-hut style temple was raised in the 16th century by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya; the great Kalyan Sagar lake beside it teems with sacred fish and turtles.
Where the right foot fell कथा
As Vishnu's chakra divided the body of Sati, her right foot came to rest at Udaipur, and the Mother took her seat there as Tripura Sundari — the supreme beauty of the three worlds, worshipped in the Sri Vidya tradition as Lalita.
For the kings of Tripura she was the guardian Mother of the realm, and to this day pilgrims from across the Northeast gather at her Matabari, above all at Diwali.
